5 Simple But Natural Ways to Curb Depression

As we conclude 2017 and begin 2018, many individuals think of the resolutions of the year that they can work on holistically and collectively improving in their lives. One of my resolutions for 2018 is to naturally curb my depression. Some of these tips I hope to religiously practice in my daily routine. Together, I put 5 simple but effective ways to curb depression:

1. Exercise Regularly

The hardest part is getting the motivation to get to the gym, but knowing the long-lasting effects of exercise, such as increasing endorphins and increasing circulation to the brain, it can help the initial process. However, exercise has a point of diminishing returns. By increasing your exercise levels too quickly without enough rest can negatively affect your emotional state and cause depressive symptoms. Being mindful of that balance of exercise to each breath the body naturally takes can help determine the right exercise level for you.

2. Mediterranean Diet

A low-fat diet, rich in fish, especially omega-3s, and folic acid can be helpful for mood. Avoiding alcohol and minimizing caffeine use is also helpful. A Mediterranean-style diet, rich in veggies, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and fish, is linked to a lower risk of developing depression, according to a 2009 study in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

3. Avoiding Alcohol and Drugs

Alcohol and illegal drugs can interfere with depression medications and alter your mood—and not in a good way. Alcohol is a depressant, and many street drugs deplete serotonin and dopamine, which are important neurotransmitters in relation to mood. Try reducing or eliminating alcohol and drug intake so that mood levels can become stabilized.

4. Reconnect

Try establishing a day and time during the week where all that is done is reaching out to different friends and family and challenging yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. The biggest step to reconnecting is the follow-through. By checking in with individuals on plans, this will be a friendly reminder to the person as well as show effort!

5. Eat and Breathe mood-enhancing herbs

Some great herbs that help uplift and cheer the mood include saffron, folates, and zinc. Taking saffron has been shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression. One way to increase your folate levels is to consume folate-rich foods daily. These include beans, lentils, fortified cereals, dark leafy greens, sunflower seeds, and avocados. Zinc is a nutrient linked with mental functions such as learning and behavior.

I hope some of these tips help you and your wellbeing begin the new year strong and ready to change.
