Exploring Life Values with Personal Well-being
How do we take care of our well-being exactly? We can get a massage, or eat right, but is there more to the source of our identity? Our life values are a core source of what we identify with throughout our time here on Earth. Through qualities of self-regulation and self-compassion, individuals have a greater persistence towards long-term goals and improved resilience towards daily setbacks. Mental and physical exercise can help establish and integrate persistence and resilience in everyday life.
One mental exercise that can improve physical well-being is known as self-regulation. Self-regulation is defined as the capacity to override impulses, thoughts, behaviors, as well as emotions. To self-regulate, one must start with a desirable goal or state of being. Then, one monitors their behavior. Lastly, one must enlist some motivations in order to follow through with the desired goal.
Mental self-regulation can take a lot of our energy and resources. When those resources get diminished, it directly and negatively affects self-esteem. To increase our mental exercise ability, it is important to increase our physical exercise. Sometimes, it can be difficult to exercise because of general fatigue. However, rest, motivation, and positive thinking can restore that fatigue that occurs during day to day activiites
Self-regulation can be boosted with a shot of positive emotion, known as self-compassion. Self-compassion is extending compassion to one's self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering. It has been linked with reflective wisdom- the combination of self-awareness, insight, and the capacity to see life as it really is.
Self-awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Insight is the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a
person or thing. Lastly, there is no way to define the capacity to see life as it really is, because it comes down to perception of the individual. Once one masters the first two pieces, true perception begins to unfold.
By keeping reflective wisdom in mind through day to day activities, compassion can in turn help provide a better quality of life. With self-regulation, compassion can help heal the mind inside and out from negative stimuli. After we heal the self, we can truly heal others with loving compassion.
