Have you ever had a restless night? A night where you had trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? This is called insomnia and according to the American Sleep Association one in three adults have occasional insomnia and one in ten adults have chronic insomnia.
When you see your acupuncturist for sleeping issues there will be numerous questions you will be asked. A few of those questions can include “do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep?” “Do you wake up at a certain time each night?” “Are you more stressed than normal?” “Do you have vivid dreams or nightmares at night?” Answers to these questions and more will help your at acupuncturist know how to treat you, because there is not just one treatment for insomnia.
Some common points to help with sleep include Heart 7 and Pericardium 6. Pericardium 6 is well-known for treating nausea and vomiting, however it is also effective in relieving insomnia and reducing anxiety. This point is located on the inner forearm three finger breadths below the wrist and in between the two tendons. Heart 7 is commonly used for sleep disorders. This point is located on the inner side of the wrist crease, in line with the little finger.
Another set of points that help with sleep are Gall Bladder 20 and Urinary Bladder 10. These points are located on the neck and help relieve tension and pain in the neck, cold and flu symptoms, as well as headaches. Gall Bladder 20 is also called the Gates of Consciousness and is situated below the base of the skull, in the hollow between the two vertical neck muscles, 2-3 inches apart based on the size of the head. Urinary Bladder 10 is positioned on the back of the neck, one-half inch below the base of the skull, on the muscles located on the outer side of the spine.
A third set of acupuncture points that are helpful for sleep issues are Kidney 6 and Urinary Bladder 62. These points are effective for treatment back pain, anxiety, eye problems, digestive disorders and headaches, in addition to sleep disorders. Kidney 6 is located on the inside of the ankle bone, in a slight depression. Urinary Bladder 62 is located is located on the first indentation right below the outer anklebone. These two points are located on opposite of each other on the ankle bone - inner and outer. You can hold both points at the same time.
Insomnia is far too common an occurrence, however, there are many treatment options available. Try acupuncture in addition to meditation, stress relief, and identifying what might be causing the insomnia.
